Sexism

In 2010, Bic used a 1960s style advert that many have branded sexist. It shows an out-dated stereotype with the tag line 'For legs that beckon'. Has anything really changed in the last 50 years?

In this section we look at the history of sexism, both in the church and in wider society. We ask whether the Bible is sexist, and whether churches today are, and need to be, sexist too.

We look at two different approaches - a 'feminist' approach that believes that men and women should have the same opportunities, and a traditionalist approach that suggests that men and women are different but equal.

For the feminist, women are still massively under-represented in Parliament, senior management, positions of authority and power in the church etc. They are undervalued and underpaid, and radical change is needed.

For the traditionalist, women are being asked to do too much these days, to aspire to top leadership positions at work as well as bringing up a family. This change in roles has not helped women to flourish, and is harmful to families.

How can these two different positions co-exist and where should Christians stand?
