Marriage and Divorce

When people get married in a church, they promise before God that they will stay together forever, For Roman Catholics, marriage is the only proper place to raise children, and children need the stability of knowing that their parents will stick together whatever happens.

Other Christian churches note that society has changed, and feel that the church needs to change with it. Most Christian churches recognise that some relationships get so broken that they can't be fixed. However, remarriage after divorce is a problem, because Jesus spoke specifically against this.

Some Christians think divorce and remarriage are wrong. Others agree with divorce but not remarriage. Some Christians focus on Jesus' teaching about forgiveness, and believe Jesus' teachings against divorce were meant to protect vulnerable women who couldn't look after themselves if their husbands were allowed to divorce them. If this is true, Jesus might not be against people getting divorced and remarried today.
