Birth and Death

Multimedia

Euthanasia comes up as a storyline in every soap opera at some stage. There are far fewer films that deal with it in as much depth, but here are a few:

Film Rating/5

Million Dollar Baby - The first half of this film is ideal for a lesson about sexism, as a female boxer struggles against prejudice to become a world-class boxing pro. One sly punch, however, leaves her paralysed, and suddenly the film's focus shifts entirely to the euthanasia debate. The most important element of the film is the boxer's relationship with her coach. He has to struggle with his religious beliefs and decide whether to help her to die.

The Sea Inside - Ramon Sampedro has spent the past 26 years as a quadriplegic. He's had enough of life, so he contacts the Die With Dignity foundation, and a volunteer there takes his case. His lawyer Julia also suffers from a disability, and the two develop a close bond over the next two years as they challenge the court for his right to choose death.

Should Doctors Assist Dying? - A 25 minute film produced by the Christian Medical Fellowship which includes interviews with doctors, disabled rights activists, and church leaders giving a Christian perspective on the impact theAssisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill would have on the vunerable elderly and terminally ill.
