(a) (ii) What biblical and Church teachings might be used in a discussion about abortion? [AO1:40%]

  1. Identify key words in the title
  1. Introductory paragraph to explain why the Bible is used by Christians and the importance of Church teachings / statements
  1. Go through ALL of the sheets I have given you PLUS any of the textbooks I’ve recommended PLUS any books in the library PLUS a review of websites  and links on ARNEWEB page / this site if using the computer.  Your own ‘Googling’ on the ‘net’ and identify possible quotes to use on abortion

Remember at this stage you are only being descriptive so it is fine to include quotes that are against abortion and those that may support it.

  1. Prioritise them according to which ones you think are most likely to be used in a discussion on abortion.  Consider your organisation of quotes/statements e.g. Old Testament then New Testament Quotes and/or quotes that are ‘anti’ abortion first then those that are ‘pro-choice’.
  2. Select a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 of them in your answer.  I suggest that at least 5 of them are biblical
  3. For each one, write quote/statement out in full, with an accurate reference
  4. What does it mean?  STATE what is means as simply, concisely and accurately as you can.  Does the quote support a pro or anti position on abortion?
  5. Make sure that you have included a RANGE of different viewpoints/explanations of the teachings of the Church.  As a minimum include the ‘Roman Catholic Church’ and the ‘Church of England’.  Others may include the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church and the United Reformed Church.

Remember for (a) your answer is a PURELY DESCRIPTIVE answer – no need for discussion or debate; save that for later.

(b)  Explain how Christians might put their beliefs about abortion into action. [AO2:35%]

This question tests your ability to describe, analyse and explain the relevance and application of a Christian faith on abortion.  (see the detailed breakdown on the levels in this section AO2 – a paper copy)

  1. Identify key words in the title
  1. Introductory paragraph to explain key words

This question is open to a variety of different styles of presentation.  It would make sense to ‘brainstorm’ the areas of exploration before gathering research.

A sample structure may include:

  1. An exploration of various actions that Christians might take as individuals and in groups to oppose or support abortion.  Support your discussion with reference to biblical / Christian teaching stated in a (i) where/if appropriate.
  1. Discuss various Christian organisations who address the abortion issue.  Remember to include their beliefs and practical response(s) to the issue.
  1. Discuss actions that different denominations of the Christian Church have taken on the abortion issue.
