Gene Therapy

Genetic Engineering

The Bible and Gene Therapy

The whole concept of gene therapy would make no sense to people thousands of years ago when the Bible was written, so there won't be specific passages about it. As always, sanctity of life passages are used in debate - either to argue against putting lives at risk with new procedures, or to argue for therapies that save lives. Teaching on love and Jesus' example in healing people may be used to support gene therapy in principle.

The Bible Against Gene Therapy

The beauty of creation - Genesis tells of how God created the world 'and saw it was good'. The Psalms say 'The Earth is the Lord's'. It is important to remember our place in creation, to respect the beauty of nature and not tamper with or change the building blocks of life:

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

Psalm 8:3-4

God's plan for humanity - Several passages, such as Jeremiah 29:11, say that God has a plan for us. As such, we should not use gene therapy to change our DNA in a way that affects future generations.

A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children

Proverbs 13:22

The Bible For Gene Therapy

We live in a fallen world - The Bible says that sin brought death and decay into the world. God did not want the world to be like this, so anything we do to fix it is good.

Creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

Romans 8:21

God made scientists - God made mankind in His image, giving us the ability to develop gene therapy. Using genetics to heal people is doing what God intended us to do when he gave humans dominion over the world.

So God created mankind in his own image... God blessed them and said to them... “Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Genesis 1:27,28
