Right to a Child

small logo

Does anyone have a right to child?

Natural Law says that one of the Primary Precepts, a key purpose of human life, is reproduction. The Theory of Evolution says that the instinct to reproduce explains why our genes have survived. Does this mean we have a right to have a child?

This site looks at what 'the right to a child' might mean, particularly in the light of infertility treatment. We also discuss issues around the question of who should have this 'right'. For example, should a single person or a gay couple be allowed IVF? There are more contraversial ways of having children, including surrogacy. Is there a conflict of rights here? How do we determine if surrogacy is ethical?

This site looks at how different ethical theories tackle these controversial issues. It also considers a Christian response to infertility treatments. This is an area of medicine still in its infancy, and the issues raised will get more complex and increasingly contraversial.

There are some resources particularly aimed at A level RS students. There are also book reviews, links to other websites (including news reports) and multimedia resources. We are looking to develop interactive quizzes, and A level Philosophy and Ethics students can find help with past exam questions.
