The spiritual leader of the church usually has great experience of talking through problems, and can offer expert counselling and advice on a range of issues including unemployment, illness, infidelity, addiction, stress, violence, children, financial problems, childlessness etc. This may include looking at Biblical teaching and praying together.
There are many Christian organisations specifically set up
to help couples experiencing difficulties in marriage.
They run seminars, hold conferences, set up smaller, local groups and
provide a range of resources such as books and videos to help couples keep their
marriage strong. One example is The 60 Minute Marriage, available as a book,
video or audio tape, giving advice to married couples.
The church as a whole may run a range of groups, meetings
and classes for married couples, offering advice, support and encouragement.
There may be opportunities to hear from Christians who have been married
for some time, or those who have had to cope with difficult children etc.
Social events at church may take the pressure off, and there may be a
baby-sitting circle that allows married couples to have evenings off where they
can get to know each other again and talk.
The church often prays in general for married couples as well as for
specific problems being faced. Practical
help may be needed, such as cooking for someone while his/her partner is in
hospital, or financial help through difficult times.
Sometimes the best help comes from individual relationships
where you can really talk to one another. A friend who was at your wedding might
remind you of your vows and point out the positive points of your marriage when
you’re feeling down. Alternatively,
they may know you well enough to tell you you’re being a jerk or that you need
to get your act together. Honest and open relationships can be a real help in times of
trouble, giving a different perspective on your problems and reminding you to
ask God for help.
All Christians will be motivated by the various teaching about love. Christians are the body of Christ on earth and will care for and support one another.
